The scene on Magazine Street was overwhelming, to say the least. The row of local drinking spots overflow with fans, mimicking the cups of adoring patrons. Dozens of police cars with singing sirens parade down the road-narrowed by grinning crowds on either side. Officers exchange hugs, kisses, high-fives, and ecstatic "Who Dats" and horn blows with the surrounding crowd. But the citizens of the Who Dat Nation stand united by more than just the skin on the palms of each others hands. Citizens and friends of New Orleans are brought together through insurmountable joy, home-team exhilaration, and a few hundred thousand shots toasting the New Orleans Saints, the Who Dat Nation, and the recovery of this great city.

And somewhere in hell Buddy D. is popping open a bottle of Who Dat champagne...on ice.

by Lauren Siegel

Finish Strong... By Joey Chaisson

Well here it is 8:15 on the Monday following the Saints victory over the Vikings. I still feel extreme excitement, happiness, joy and the relief of the weight that comes along with being a true member of the WHO DAT NATION finally being lifted off of my shoulders. It's almost as if the sky outside seems a little clearer today, the air a little cleaner etc etc. I am going to attempt to capture my feelings before during and after the game.
Before the game started I must admit that sleeping wasn't very easy to do. Normally this is one of the easiest things in my life but thinking about what was ahead of me kept me awake. Wondering how our boys would play, wondering which feelings I would feel. Would I feel the feelings I have always dreamed of, or would I feel the feelings of sorrow that so many in the media were hoping we would feel.
It was only right that this game be played against Brett Farve, the one and only thing that could possibly steal from our spotlight would be Farve, one of the greatest qb's ever, who also happens to be one of the more selfish players in the game. Our media loves him and did not want his story to end. All week long all we heard was how Brett would win it, but what the forgot was how we never gave it to him in the first place.
I'm not sure if I have ever felt so calm in my life as we walked up to the dome. The excitement all around was at peak levels, as people had been partying for days, not to mention so many others have been waiting for this day since they were born. Sitting down in my seat to eat my nachos and drinking my root beer was an experience in itself. Some people may not know this but the plaza level will be gutted this off season and redone with new chairs and more seating. So I took that time to sit and remember all of the good times I have had in that seat, and also some of the bad times.
Before you know it, it's time for the kickoff and my heart is slowly starting to race. The energy by now has already built up inside of the DOME to extreme levels. People are ready for football, and so was I.
I remember thinking before this game that I wanted and hoped for a blowout because I didn't think my heart could handle watching a slug fest that went down to the wire. {please remember this line I will come back to it} Of course what we got was two heavyweights that were hyped up beyond belief. Two of the best qb's in football, with the two best offenses. The Vikes have one of the scariest defensive front four and our offensive lines is the best in football. Our defense creates more turnovers that any team in the league. What we got was an epic battle that will forever go down as an instant classic in NFL, and sports history.
There were so many moments during this game where I wondered if this was the moment that we would pull away or was it gonna be the moment where we had to start playing catch up. This feeling went on for 4 quarters and into overtime.
One thing I can remember is the true feeling that our team felt the passion pouring out of the crowd. Our team's moto this year was "Finish Strong". During the overtime, after Devery made a 3rd down catch and the play was under review to see if we made a first down or not, the crowd slowly started chanting "FINISH STRONG, FINISH STRONG" this chant grew louder and louder, and then started picking up speed until the whole DOME was screaming it. " FINISH STRONG!! FINISH STRONG!!" The review came back and we didn't get the first down which lead to coach P. going for it and then P. Thomas diving over the top for the 1st down. Finishing strong.
From the start of this game on down to the end, I seriously felt as if my head were going to explode. The drama was way to much for me after living almost 31 years and being a Saints fan as long as I could remember. There was no reason for me to quit now, and I wasn't going to. Head ache or not.
On the last play of the game the Vikes called a time out to try and ice Hartley. Everyone around me was in a mixture of excitement, and disgust. It was like someone took a blender and mixed all of our high and low experiences all into one long minute. The refs then signal for the the clock to run, Hartley lines up, I throw and arm around one of my best buds Brett Dawson. I feel other arms outsretched grabbing my shoulder and head. The kick comes and is then followed by one of the greatest outpourings of joy. An extreme release of pressure and pain that is quickly filled with relief and pure bliss. You could sell this feeling for thousands on the street if it were possible to bottle it up. The sounds in the DOME were screams, mixed with laughter, mixed with cries of joy, mixed with memories of pain, mixed with the sorrow that those that have that have left us can't be here to see this. The guy sitting in front of us was a very popular local sports radio guy in Baton Rouge named Jimmy Ott. He has sat in that seat for a few other big games. The Monday night game the Saints returned to the DOME against Atlanta. The Cardinals playoff game and now the biggest event to ever take place in Louisiana.... The NFC Championship vs the Vikings. He was so excited that when the kick split the uprights he actually jumped out of control fell back words over his seat and landed at our feet on the ground. He laid on that dirty floor, not because he was hurt, but because he was happy. Tears of joy...
If you are wondering if I cried.... I will tell you that very few in the DOME weren't crying. Tears started rolling down my face before the kick was even made. Not from joy, but from the pure concentration I was doing, the hope, the fact that I have never thought I would be so close to this moment and all that is stopping me is this field goal. The kick splits the uprights and I swear to all of you, at that moment I felt like I could fly. There aren't many moments available on Earth that can allow you to feel the way I did. This was one of them and to answer the question... Yes I did cry.. Tears started falling. The kick was made and Brett, Ramsey, Jimmy, the guy next to me, behind me, myself and many others all hugged and started jumping up and down and just letting out these spectacular yells, screams of joy. The whole entire DOME was going 100% crazy. There is nothing I can say, even video wouldn't do it justice. You had to be there. There was a reason why those ticket prices were so high, and the reason was the chance to experience something very very few get to experience.
The celebration in the DOME never ends, during the ceremony you can see Anthony Hargrove doing snow Angels in the BLACK N GOLD confetti. The fans and the players were all feeling the same way. It was like a dream, only it wasn't. It was real. It was real. IT WAS REAL!!!!
Leaving the DOME we were accompanied by endless fireworks on pretty much every street corner. Loud WHO DAT chants, chants of BLACK N GOLD Superbowl, We're going to Miami, Finish Strong and many others. People were dancing in the streets, on every street. The only sad faces around were the 2 or 3 Vikings fans walking around by themselves like they were lost. Which strangely enough, was exactly the same thing they were doing before the game.
We sat in traffic for about an hour to 1 1/2 hour. We didn't move because people were on top of cars dancing, hanging out of windows, dancing around cars.
When we were walking out of the DOME I was telling my friends Chris Wilson and Brett that I was praying that we blew these guys out. Now that I got to experience the game that we just witnesses, I told them that I couldn't imagine a better way to end our streak of pain. If we blew them out then it would have been a great experience that was spread out amongst the game, like the Cardinals game was. The overtime victory by a fg {which is what everyone hoped didn't happen given our history with kickers} captured all of our emotions and was given to us in one instant.
Win or lose I would have still been a proud member of the WHO DAT NATION. Willing to follow my boys, my team the SAINTS anywhere and through anything.
No longer will we hear haters saying "the aint's will never make it to the Superbowl" We will never hear opposing fans ask us how many times have we been to the Superbowl. There are a good number of people around here that will have to find something else to hate on because the Saints and the WHO DAT NATION are looking at those same haters with smiles on our faces that really translate into " GET A LIFE" Most people can think of something better to say but I know certain people that I know would rather me keep this rated G and that's exactly what I will do. Because we have class, we have faith, we have a team that is going to the SUPERBOWL. We were there to experience it.
One question that I have been asked a million times was " Why are you such a die hard SAINTS fan " Last night, being in that DOME, with a bunch of my boys, guys that I commonly share the same feelings with, last night, is what my answer to that question is. Last night is now the answer to any question thrown into my face because of someone else wanting to steal the small amounts of joy that we had before this game. The NFC Championship and Superbowl birth is why I do this. It's why we have always had faith.
There are a handful of moments that have given me similar feelings, asking Alli to marry me, our wedding and last dance, the birth of Cooper and seeing him for the very first time and now, seeing my team, in our home away from home the DOME, seeing them win to move on to the Superbowl in such a dramatic way.
The SAINTS are in the Superbowl. Try saying that. Try saying that a little LOUDER!! Enjoy this. We all so very much deserve this moment.
WHO DAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I plan on having a new article ready each and every Monday. Happy Mardi Gras!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://www.saintsmix.com/2010/02/finish-strong.html' title='Finish Strong... Most recently the Saints have answered "Who (Dat)?" but this begs yet another deeply reflective question: "Where?"
This is turning out to be a rather personal decision- where do you want to remember the first Saints' Superbowl victory of all time? Here are a few takes.

First let's discuss the obvious: Sun Life Stadium.
Think 76,500 screaming fans by your side sounds like a life-long memory of history in the making? Well, Miami might be your place. Here's the catch: each one of those pricey tangerine seats isn't only reserved for Saints fans-you'll be watching the game right alongside just as many of your horseshoe clad enemies. The home of the Dolphins is sure to be nothing like larger than life Superdome atmosphere. Your yelps and chants will be met with just as many for the opposition. This sad but true fact that leaves me to imagine the frustration of attending Dome fans who are used to a mere lull of a crowd surmounting the decibel rating of a jet engine.
On the other hand many N'awlinians plan to hitch a ride to Miami and simply camp out during the game. Three words: "Open Container Law." If you plan on joining in and tailgating this way make sure to plan ahead. Otherwise the only waves you'll be catching by South Beach are those broadcast on sports FM while you're sitting in three hours of game day traffic. But is Miami's ultra cool, spendy, trendy, Latin vibe really conducive to the Big-Easy energy radiating from our black and gold hearts?

I think most of us local folks realize where party's real capital city is. Bourbon Street is sure to excite, amuse, and booze you to the fullest. Find yourself sitting on a ripped bar stool surrounded by the United Nation of Who Dat and plentiful liquid enthusiasm just a pinky's reach away. Now this is where it's at! The NFL that's who.
Apparently right after the Saints defeated the Vikings last weekend the National Football League set forth on an attempt to trademark the beloved phrase that so many NOLA fans sport on signs, chests, bumpers, and flags. The NFL is currently pushing to officially license "Who Dat?" in the state of Florida. The worst part about the situation is that booming local businesses who offer unique "Who Dat?" apparel are being audited by NFL reps with the following ultimatum: destroy the gear or pay up. This suggestion would mean a gigantic loss for shops like Fleurty Girl and Storyville, and the local fan gear economy would be about as stimulating as Chad Ochocinco's autobiography. Something tells me this will be a fight for the courts...
So what to say about a uber-powerful corporation's effort to exploit a chant from a longstanding cultural tradition, beaten and battered, and risen from the debris? Well, I'll start by saying that this debacle is even more absurd than Paris Hilton's recent legal appropriation of the term "That's Hot" (c).

There's only one last comment to make here...Hey NFL- "F*** Dat!"
Oh, sorry boys, I've already copyrighted that one.

by Lauren Siegel

For more info see Nola.com story here.
Image: Who Dat Scarf by Sarah Ott found at Feet First

Saints - Colts Super Bowl

The Saints earned their chance to cap off a great season with a trip to the Super Bowl and the possibility of earning the title of NFL World Champions. This is just a great moment for the players, organization and for the city of New Orleans. The Saints earned this game through their opportunistic defense which forced 5 turnovers from the Vikings. Sure AD and Brett have a history of turning it over, but Favre had thrown a career low 7 interceptions this season and the Saints got him for 2 big ones in the NFC Championship game. Also how about the clutch kick from Garrett Hartley or Reggie Bush reaching for and making sure he got the ball over the pylon, or the key long kickoff returns. The Saints were clutch all game and that is why they won, they didn't play great the whole game as the Vikings had 31 first downs to the Saints 15 and more time of possession at 36:49 to 27:56. In the end clutch wins, hopefully they can keep it up for one more game.

7 and 0, 9 to GO!!

7 and “0”, 9 to GO!!!
Todd M. Bourgeois

Last night was a turning point in the history of the Saints franchise. For only the second time in the teams’ history, the Saints are 7-0! With 9 games to go in the regular season, is it too early to whisper or even talk about 16-0 regular season??

Drew Brees’ surgical precision and wide receivers that look like they each had trampolines in their shoes made our lives a lot nicer!! Even Shockey, whom we all know is quite large, look like a ballet dancer and magician as he leaped and ever so gracefully-if there is such a thing as grace with a 6ft 6 man weighing 280 lbs-hitting the ground without losing concentration and catching a key pass in the game. Pierre Thomas and Mike Bell running like the bulls in Pamplona Spain each year left 3 falcons with concussions-so says their own team website!!! Can we get better-sure! Can we lose-if we get overconfident? Hey Reggie- next time you say we can win all the games we have left, why not contribute something to the game. That TD you scored on that misdirection play, my 3 yr old could have run that in! Shut up and play-that’s what you get paid to do!
Oh yeah, don’t tackle people on offense, that’s why they call holding penalties on you!!

16-0 is a dream- it’s a dream that has only happened twice- once by the 1972 Miami Dolphins, whom went on to perfect season and a Super Bowl win- and then there is New England from a few years back-18-0 going into the Superbowl and then losing to a miracle catch thrown from a New Orleans boy- Eli Manning- and completing a miracle season for the Giants while the Patriots are now obscured as the undefeated team that LOST its chance at perfection! Herein lies the question- which team will we be? But we still have a long way to go!

In a few weeks, another rocking Monday night game, New England comes to town. We all should realize that they will not lie down and they will be gunning for us- Brady, Moss, Welker-I have a funny suspicion that they too will show us that we are not the only ones that can throw the ball all over the field. Don’t be surprised if the game is in the 60’s, that’s 65-63, with who knows winning. I’m not saying we will lose already, but Carolina is on the horizon and there are still tough teams to beat even before the Pats come with guns a blazin!!.

Always remember what my grandfather says…”You can tell me about the labor, but show me the baby…”….we are still in labor and we have 9 more weeks to go! We can’t show off the baby just yet!

"FISH" Fry!!

“FISH” Fry!!
Todd M. Bourgeois

As Ricky Williams scored on his career long run of 68 yards, you got the feeling as a Saints fan that once again, kind of like our other passion, the LSU Tiger Football team, that day games in opponents stadiums are death traps and that no matter what the cost, both Saints and LSU, for that matter, should fork over the bucks and pay the NFL and NCAA whatever they want in order to play at night- then a cool “Brees” hit Miami.

If you saw the QB sneak at the end of the second quarter, and watched the negotiation between Brees and Coach Sean Payton, and then saw Payton run to the official on the sideline and tell the ref “We are sneakin it!!”….and then give the ref the always comforting “pat on the butt”, you knew we had that one!! I don’t know about you, but most of the time, a soft pat on the butt is comforting and only good comes from said pats. From that point on, the game changed.

Hey Sporano, you don’t call time out when the clock has to run-this isn’t college-it doesn't stop for a reason!!...but thanks for giving us another time out by using yours with 5 seconds left. Bet the school of “Parcells” where you learned your coaching acumen didn’t teach you to put the pressure on your own team, but instead to direct it to the other team. Wonder what the Miami papers say today about that decision…something like….”Did Ricky Slip Tony some of his stuff??”,,, but thanks again by the way!!

I wish I could have been there-but I had representation there. My brother in law and 7 others were on his bachelor party trip- a trip that in the second quarter had them running down for their 5th beer of the game and had them asking themselves…”Is this really happening…and more importantly….are we here or are we still hung-over from the night before and dreaming this??”…. then later, after a 22 point 4th quarter and a show of force of sheer resilience and gestational fortitude-that would be GUTS to those in Miami, our Saints prevailed and I received some interesting texts msgs such as “Who Dat… what a game….. Fins fans crying… in parking lot and looks like Mardi Gras with all the Saints fans!”

Note to Bill Parcells “Bill, don’t put the Saints on the schedule. Not only do we party before, during, and after the game as if it were Mardi Gras, don’t you realize that in Louisiana, “Fish Fry’s” are as common as say you eating too much!!”….two words for you Bill, Jenny Craig!!!

One GIANT Step: Saints vs Giants

By: Todd M. Bourgeois

With all the hype that surrounded this past Sunday’s clash between the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants and the previous cellar dweller of the NFC South division from 2008 New Orleans Saints, you might have thought that this was David vs. Goliath and that New York would simply overpower New Orleans.

I mean, we should expect that to happen-New York has 10 Million people on one little island and near 20 million in the entire state-the entire state of Louisiana only has 3 million! The sheer numbers game is enough to scare anyone-but not us!

A community and team built on resilience and strength, sweat and tears, stood strong and simply ran away with the game and quite frankly, stomped on the pride of those New Yorkers we so muck love to hate.

As we watched a hometown boy done well-Eli Manning- we could see that he couldn’t stop pouting as we consistently knocked him around like his older brothers did when he was five. Eli needed four sets of eyes to help him as the Saints relentless pass rush put Eli on edge and at many times, had him running around like his father Archie back in the day of the “Aints”.

With this big win and show of strength, the future is bright for our hometown Saints. But lets be cautious, even though the Vegas odds makers have us as favorites in every game left on the schedule, we still have some tough competition-Atlanta- Carolina-these teams always play us tough, not to mention the rejuvenated New England Patriots who come calling on the Saints to the dome in a few weeks which could possibly end in a 100-100 tie with the way Brees and Brady are throwing the ball!!

Expectations are high-fans are juiced-but as my grandfather would say-“You can tell me about the labor, but show me the baby..” New Orleans has just started to go into labor; it’s a long season of pushing before us!!

The Revival of the Saints

The Saints appear ready and willing to reinvent themselves, and if the first six weeks of the 2009 football season are any indication, it seems that they already have. They've shed the image of themselves as the pass-happy, offensive dynamo with little or no help on the other side of the football, and are embracing the role of one of the reigning contenders in the NFC. Some may argue that it's too early to tell how effective the Saints will be down the stretch, but the 48-27 victory on Sunday over the then unbeaten Giants proves that they can contend with, and even unabashedly dismantle, one of the league's premier franchises. This year they've also quelled promising upstarts, the Jets, made sound defenses the object of ridicule, the Eagles, and, perhaps slightly less laudable, slaughtered the hapless, Lions.

In Sunday's big win, Drew Brees showed us nothing new, that is to say he was extraordinary. Passing for 360 yards on 23 of 30 throws, and scoring 4 Tds in the process, Brees’ consistency is astounding. If he doesn’t enter into a discussion of the league’s best Qbs, then it isn’t a legitimate discussion. If his numbers from last season, up through the first six weeks of this one, haven’t convinced even the most stalwart of his critics of his deserved place among the league’s elite players, then there must be something else about the Saints which is staining his reputation. Well, the Saints are fourth best in the league in rushing yards per game, with the continued consistency of Pierre Thomas and the surprising explosiveness of Mike Bell, and the entire offense is ranked first in the NFL. Again. So, I guess it must be the defense.

That brings us to my next point. When, in recent memory, have you seen a Saint’s team, or any team for that matter, so complete and effective? The ‘07 Patriots come to mind, and maybe the Colts in previous years (perhaps even including this one), but should we even be compared to these teams? If so, that is an honor in and of itself. It does seem to be a valid comparison, however, considering the way in which the newly invigorated defensive corps, no doubt revitalized by the genius of defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, terrorizes any offensive threat. The Saints offense still posts big numbers, but the games are no longer even close, as they were so often last year. In terms of this past Sunday’s game against the Giants, Eli Manning certainly shined at moments, as did the potent running game of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw, but most of the time they just seemed stifled. The two sacks Manning had, coming from NT Remi Ayodele and Safety tackle-machine Roman Harper, aren’t a particularly impressive statistic by themselves, but the story of this defense is more about its oppressive tenacity.

The Saint’s secondary is a study in this new defensive vigor. Darren Sharper, perhaps the best off-season acquisition by the Saints, has been the quintessential ball-hawk, with a league-leading 5 interceptions, not to mention two Tds off of these picks and nearly a dozen other passes defended. He would’ve tacked on another interception on Sunday, were it not for a penalty which recalled his grab. Jabari Greer, who was able to get an interception on Sunday off of a shaky pass from Manning, has also exhibited some outstanding ball coverage. For an area of the defense, which as of a season ago appeared deservedly suspect, the Secondary seems to have addressed its issues with the help of Williams and stellar individual talents.

The only aspect of the Saint’s team which gives me cause for concern is its special teams, which from the very first game has exhibited some poor tackling ability and some, at times, baffling decision-making. Against the Giants, Domenik Hixon threaded the defense with ease, racking up 230 yards on 7 kickoff returns and 51 yards on two punt returns, with return averages of 32.9 and 25.5 respectively. On one of his returns, Saint’s kicker Thomas Morstead had to make the tackle himself, preventing an almost certain touchdown run. Now, tackling doesn’t appear to be much of a problem for the defensive group on downs, but, as evidenced by Hixon’s numbers, it is a huge concern on special teams. Another problem involves Reggie Bush, as the team's designated punt returner. I’m sure that by simply mentioning his name I’m drawing down a hornet’s nest of criticism upon me, but honestly, despite strangely being able to retain the mantle of a solid offensive threat, what’s he done this season? And if you only consider his special teams play, he appears to be more of a liability than a real strength for the Saints. For one, he doesn’t like to protect the ball. He has three fumbles this season, on generally limited touches. This, coupled with especially limited production on returns over the past few games ( an average of 3 yards per return over the last three), probably makes him look more like an easy meal to a defense, rather than a force to be reckoned with. Above all, however, what confuses me the most is his propensity to return the ball despite not only the almost certainty of a no-gain, but also a high probability of a loss of yardage, a fumble, and/or injury. Seeing him get leveled by Giant’s defenders a couple of times, rather than call for an understandably necessary fair-catch, made me question his football (or otherwise) IQ. Other times he appears indecisive, deciding too late to move clear of the ball, or committing other acts of questionable judgment (Is running backwards still a Bush concern, or have we given up on that one?). In any case, no matter how explosive he sometimes can be rushing the ball or catching a pass, his behavior on special teams is that which is of the most detriment to his team, and should therefore be addressed by the Saint’s coaching staff.

Despite, in my opinion, the one glaring flaw in their squad, the Saints seem poised to enjoy one of their most successful seasons ever. Should they continue to dominate their opponents, with an especially notable game against New England in late November, who would be remiss to state what was for a longtime unutterable: The Saints are unstoppable.

Saints vs Buccaneers,Live Score, Time TV

Saints vs Buccaneers

Time:1:00 PM ET

TV: FOX

Saints vs Packers| Preview,Saints Game Score,TV,Recap

The Saints vs Packers at home - game time Monday, November 24, 8:30 PM ET.
